چکیده

Diverse industrial wastes have aggravated the problem of water pollution. This problem becomes complex because of the non-degradability of inorganic pollutants like heavy metals. Metals have received particular attention among other non-degradable toxic chemicals because of their adverse effects on aquatic life forms. To control water pollution, the immediate problems have to be solved by adopting alternative technologies to chemical-specific tools which suit low capital availability and minimum manpower. There has been considerable interest in using aquatic plants for removal of various pollutants, including heavy metals, from water bodies because of their fast growth rate and simple growth requirements, which are favorably compared to those of fish. Moreover, aquatic plants are particularly important in heavy metal pollution studies, since the analysis of these plants can give an indication of the state of water environment to which they have been exposed. The common duckweed, Lemna minor, is potentially useful as an indicator of pollution because of its ability to integrate and rapidly monitor the pollutants’ variations in the water. Moreover, they tolerate unstable environmental conditions and exhibit high sensitivity to heavy metal toxicity. The majority of published data concerning the heavy metal removal potential by aquatic plants is focused on single metal ∗This paper has beed presented at MBCAC III (3rd Mediterranean Basin Conference on Analytical Chemistry) 4-9 June, 2000 Antalya-Turkey

Review of Heavy Metal Accumulation in Aquatic Environment of Northern East Mediterrenean Sea Part II: Some Non-Essential Metals

Heavy metals that enter marine environment and remain in the water as well as the sediments are accumulated by aquatic organisms, thus becoming highly good indicators to monitor metal accumulation in the long run. Metals are potentially harmful to humans and most organisms at varied levels of exposure and absorption. Northern East Mediterranean Sea is a crucial region as it is an area, shared b...

Determination of some heavy metal levels in three freshwater fish in Keban Dam Lake (Turkey) for public consumption

The accumulation of iron, zinc, copper and cobalt in the muscles of three freshwater fish (Cyprinus carpio, Squalius cephalus and Capoeta umbla) from Keban Dam Lake (Turkey) were investigated between September 2009 and April 2010. The concentration of heavy metals were found as Zn>Fe>Cu>Cd respectively. A positive relationship was found between heavy metal levels and fish size. The levels of al...

Toxic Effects of Heavy Metals on Plant Growth and Metal Accumulation in Maize (Zea maysL.)

Background: A pot experiment was conducted to determine the toxic effects of some heavy metals on the plant growth and seed yield of maize (Zea mays L.). Materials and Metheds: Heavy metals Mn, Pb, Cd, Cr and Co individually and in combinations were added as chloride salts in solutions to the pots before sowing. The test plants for were harvested after 80 days of germination and evaluated f...

Assessment of Toxic Metals Concentration using Pearl Oyster, ‎Pinctada radiate, as Bioindicator on the Coast of Persian Gulf, Iran‎

Background: Persian Gulf is a semi-closed environment which is affected by pollution ‎from heavy metals. Entrance of heavy metals to the water column and binding to ‎sediment particles can affect the benthic organisms that can accumulate these ‎materials in their body. Noticing this ability, mussels are considered as bio-monitoring ‎agents.‎ Methods: The pearl oyster, Pinctada radiate, and sed...

Analysis of Trace Metals in Surface and Bottled Waters with Optima 7300 DV ICP-OES

Heavy metals are among the most significant freshwater pollutants and pose severe threats to geographical biodiversity. Pollution by heavy metals such as Cd, Pb, etc. not only affects the productivity of crops, but also compromises the quality of the atmosphere and water bodies. By propagation through the food chain, this type of pollution also threatens the health and life of animals and human...
